About Us

Updated: April 22, 2017

Formed in 1978, Dakota Resource Council grew out of existing organizing efforts responding to concerns of coal development in Dunn and McKenzie County. Each year brings new threats to the lives and livelihoods of our members and their communities. Local residents often have to play defense when it comes to rapid energy and agriculture policies and infrastructure but find power when they come together as a community to have their voice heard.

DRC believes that the most enduring change comes from the bottom up and that our voices are stronger when we stand together. As a member-driven, non-partisan, grassroots organization, we bring together people who share our values of having local voices heard, holding decision makers accountable to their constituents, and sustainable development of resources without damaging North Dakotans lives and livelihoods. DRC envisions a prosperous and healthy North Dakota based on respect for its land and its people, a healthy environment, a sustainable use of natural resources and fair markets. We support our members to take actions to ensure safe and responsible oil and gas development, to protect North Dakota’s agricultural economy, and to establish a foundation for a just transition to a diverse energy economy.

The Bakken boom put North Dakota on the map as ground zero in one of the biggest oil extraction developments in the U.S. It brought in quick money but with it lasting environmental, social, political, and economic consequences that have been kept quiet. We owe it to our neighbors, our communities, and our future generations to protect our state’s resources and local voices.

Responsible development requires local, short-term and long-term concerns from constituents be taken into account when decisions are being made. We can have oil development and a good place to live and work. We can have growing agricultural markets without having to sacrifice family farms. We can have renewable energy, without having to leave behind our neighbors employed by coal. We  can do it. In order to achieve this, we have to participate in a living democracy to see its done right.
