Grant Opportunities for Environmental Justice Projects Now Open!
The Mountains & Plains Environmental Justice Grants Hub is excited to announce that grant applications are now open! These grants provide critical funding and resources to support communities disproportionately impacted by environmental challenges and climate change in EPA Region 8, which includes Colorado, Utah, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and 28 federally recognized tribes.
With over $40 million available over the next three years, this is a unique opportunity to launch or expand impactful environmental justice projects in your community.
About the Grants
• Funding Amounts: Grants range from $75,000 to $350,000, depending on the scope of your project.
• Purpose: Designed to reduce barriers for small, community-based organizations to access federal funds for environmental justice projects.
• Eligibility:
• Community-based nonprofits
• Federally and state-recognized tribal governments
• Local governments
• Native American organizations
• Institutions of higher education
What Projects Are Eligible?
The grants support a wide range of activities aimed at improving environmental and community health. Examples include:
• Air and Water Quality Projects:
Monitor and improve local air and water quality to protect community health.
• Stormwater Treatment Initiatives:
Develop solutions to manage stormwater and reduce pollution risks.
• Food Access Programs:
Address food insecurity while reducing environmental impacts such as transportation emissions.
• Local Cleanup and Toxin Remediation:
Support small-scale cleanup projects and address contamination from toxic substances.
• Community Education and Training:
Build capacity through education, outreach, and environmental justice training for youth and community members.
Additional eligible projects may include disaster preparedness, green infrastructure, and initiatives that strengthen community resilience.
Key Information for Applicants
1. Grant Cycles:
Applications will be accepted in multiple cycles over the next three years. Applicants may apply in multiple cycles and can receive up to two awards, totaling a maximum of $600,000.
• Current Cycle Deadline: Applications for this cycle are due December 12, 2024.
2. Technical Assistance:
The Mountains and Plains Thriving Communities Collaborative (MaPTCC) is available to help applicants identify funding opportunities, develop project proposals, and navigate the application process.
3. Quality Assurance Requirements:
Projects involving data collection (e.g., environmental monitoring) may require a Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP) approved by the EPA. Resources are available to help applicants prepare.
