Swiftly after arriving in office, the Trump Administration launched multiple attacks on the crucial limits on the amount of methane pollution — a dangerous greenhouse gas — that the oil & gas industry is allowed to vent, leak, and simply burn off (in a process called “flaring”) on America’s public and tribal lands.
Now, the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Land Management has released a new proposal to replace these protections. But this new draft falls far short of what we need to protect clean air.
You can demand the stronger protections that we deserve.
This dangerously lax new regulation takes direct aim at North Dakotans’ health and safety — and wallets.
Every year, an estimated $330 million worth of natural gas is wasted through these practices on federal and tribal lands — a huge chunk of that is your money literally going up in smoke.
Which is why the overwhelming majority of Americans — on both sides of the aisle — support the protections the Bureau of Land Management is now working to gut.
More than 7 out of 10 voters favor federal standards that require companies to reduce gas leaks — and nearly 2 out of 3 support laws that minimize the oil & gas industry’s wasteful practices.
3 out of 5 voters oppose eliminating federal requirements on energy companies.
And 3 out of 5 Americans believe the natural gas on public lands belong to taxpayers — with 2 out of 3 voters saying that wasting those resources is also wasting their money.
So why is the Trump Administration working against the will of the people?
We don’t have to stand for it. Take action today, and add your name to the growing list of Americans calling for real protections from this dangerous pollution.
The public comment period is open until April 23, 2018, submit your comment today and tell the Secretary Zinke that we are serious about cutting methane!
